Fractional CFO Statistics: Demand, Pay, and the Engagement Model (2026)

Last updated: September 2026

"Fractional CFO" (often called a part-time CFO in the UK and Europe) is a young, loosely defined category, and public statistics do not track it directly. No tier-1 research firm sizes it cleanly, and most "fractional CFO market" figures online trace back to vendor blogs citing each other. Below are the numbers that hold up, from primary sources, with scope labeled precisely (full-time vs interim vs fractional, large enterprise vs startup). The widely repeated figures that do not survive scrutiny are listed at the end, with the reason each was excluded.

Why fractional finance leadership is growing

15.1% global CFO turnover in 2024. Across the world's 12 largest stock indices, CFO turnover reached 15.1% in 2024, above the six-year average of 14.8% (and down from a record 16.2% in 2023). Average CFO tenure fell to 5.8 years, from 6.2 in 2023. From Russell Reynolds Associates' Global CFO Turnover Index, tracking 1,822 CFO appointments and departures from 2019 to 2024 across the S&P 500, FTSE 100/250, CAC 40, DAX 40, Nikkei 225 and other major indices. This measures churn among large listed companies, not fractional demand directly, but it is the kind of gap interim and fractional leaders step into. (Russell Reynolds Associates, 2025)

51% of interim C-suite requests were for CFOs. Interim CFO remained the single most-requested C-level role in the 2026 edition, and finance was also 51% of interim requests across all levels. Requests for interim CFOs rose 14% year over year, and requests for interim C-suite leaders overall are up 151% since 2021. The 2024 edition had reported interim CFO requests up 46% year over year, and SVP/VP-level finance talent (controllers, heads of FP&A) up 114%. From Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 High-End Independent Talent Report (Business Talent Group), based on the firm's proprietary client-request data from North America and Europe. Scope: demand on one provider's platform, skewed toward large and mid-market companies, not the broader economy. (Heidrick & Struggles, 2026) + (Business Talent Group, 2024 edition)

5.6 million US independents earned more than $100,000 in 2025. Up 19% from 4.7 million in 2024 (and 86% since 2020), out of 72.9 million total independent workers. From MBO Partners' 2025 State of Independence in America (15th annual edition, survey fielded April 2025). This is the broader pool of high-earning independent professionals that fractional finance draws from, not finance-specific. (MBO Partners, 2025)

The adjacent market: finance and accounting outsourcing

Over 21% of the global business process outsourcing market was finance and accounting in 2024. Finance & accounting was the largest BPO segment by revenue share. The total BPO market is projected to reach $525.23 billion by 2030, at a 9.8% CAGR (2025 to 2030). From Grand View Research, May 2025. Scope: finance and accounting outsourcing (operations such as accounts payable and record-to-report) is broader than fractional CFO advisory. It is the closest tier-1 market sizing available, used here as a macro proxy, not as the fractional CFO market itself. (Grand View Research, via PR Newswire, 2025)

How fractional and part-time CFOs split their week

The figures in this section come from the first dedicated fractional CFO section of CFO Connect's CFO Salary Benchmark 2026, a self-selected survey of 516 senior finance leaders (sample skews toward CFOs and senior roles; France, Germany, the UK and the US weigh most). The report does not disclose how many respondents are fractional CFOs, and it measures total weekly hours, not hours per client: no primary source found measures hours or days per client directly.

51% of fractional CFOs work with three to four clients at once. A further 26% work with two clients, 16% with five or more (8% with five to seven, 8% with eight to ten), and only 8% are on a full retainer with a single company. (CFO Connect, June 2026)

65% of fractional CFOs' main clients have 1 to 50 full-time employees. Another 17% have 51 to 100 and 7% have 101 to 250, so 89% of fractional CFOs mainly serve companies under 250 employees. By stage, 38% describe their main clients as private or established companies, 24% as seed or pre-seed, 22% as Series A/B, 6% as public companies and 4% as Series C or later. (CFO Connect, June 2026)

16% of fractional CFOs work fewer than 20 hours a week, versus 3% of all respondents. 54% of fractional CFOs work under 36 hours a week in total (against 13% of all respondents), and 22% work 36 to 40 hours (against 39%). About a quarter (24%) still work more than 40 hours. Hours are across all clients combined. (CFO Connect, June 2026)

40% of fractional CFOs work fully remotely. Versus 25% of finance professionals overall. Another 50% work remotely one to four days a week, and only 2% never work remotely (8% of all respondents). (CFO Connect, June 2026)

Engagement length and how the work is contracted

42% of independent engagements now last longer than six months. Up from 27% in 2021, with 16% running beyond a year. Among the most experienced independents, 55% of projects run 12 months or more, versus 13% for newer independents. From Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 Talent Lens Survey of 3,810 full-time independent professionals (August 2025; 64% North America, 26% Europe and Africa). Scope: interim and independent talent across all functions, not CFOs specifically. (Heidrick & Struggles, 2026)

10.0 months average length of a UK interim assignment in 2026. Up from 9.6 months in 2025, with an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments and 148 days billed on average over the year (from a low of 133 in 2025). From the Institute of Interim Management's Interim Management Survey 2026 (17th edition, June 2026), a survey of UK interim managers validated against their public LinkedIn profiles. Scope: UK interims across all functions (accounting and finance is among the ten largest disciplines); the report does not state its sample size in text. (Institute of Interim Management, June 2026)

Nearly 25% of UK interims' last assignments were delivered fractionally. The first year the IIM asked the question ("how was your last assignment delivered"). Same survey, same scope: all functions, UK only. (Institute of Interim Management, June 2026)

78% of UK interim assignments are paid on a day rate. Day rates remain dominant but have fallen for a fourth consecutive year; fixed-term contracts and project or fixed-amount fees are the next most common bases, both rising. Same IIM 2026 survey. (Institute of Interim Management, June 2026)

What fractional and full-time CFOs are paid

$166,570 median annual wage for financial managers in the US (May 2025). The lowest 10% earned less than $94,310, the highest 10% more than $323,270, and the occupation is projected to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average. From the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook. Scope: "financial managers" is a broad category (controllers, treasurers, finance directors), wider than CFO, and the data largely excludes self-employment, so it understates independent CFO pay. It is the neutral government baseline. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025)

$269,750 midpoint starting salary for a US CFO in 2026. With a range of $195,500 to $321,750 depending on experience and qualifications. From Robert Half's 2026 Salary Guide, based on the firm's placement data and third-party job postings. Scope: full-time, salaried CFO, not fractional. (Robert Half, 2026 Salary Guide)

€137,500 average fractional CFO pay in 2026, about 3% above full-time. Fractional CFOs reported the highest average pay of any work type surveyed, but only around 3% more than full-time employees working 35 hours or more (€134,000). Part-time finance professionals (under 35 hours) averaged €95,000 and portfolio arrangements €107,500. 70% of fractional CFOs receive no annual bonus, against 40% of all respondents, which the report ties to retainers and day rates. From CFO Connect's CFO Salary Benchmark 2026 (516 respondents, Europe-weighted). (CFO Connect, June 2026)

£907 average day rate for UK interim managers in 2026, and £1,004 in the private sector. Up 1% overall; the private-sector average passed £1,000 for the first time, 43% above the public sector (£700). Same IIM 2026 survey. Scope: all functions, not finance-specific. (Institute of Interim Management, June 2026)

$200 to $400 per hour is the rate one platform reports for fractional CFOs. FractionalJobs.io, which reports having helped 100+ companies hire fractional talent, lists $200 to $400 per hour for fractional CFOs (February 2026). This is self-reported platform data, not a representative survey. It is included because no independent rate survey with disclosed methodology exists for this role. (FractionalJobs.io, February 2026)

AI use among fractional CFOs and independents

No primary survey found measures which software fractional CFOs use (accounting, FP&A, spreadsheet or AI tools, with shares). What is measured is AI use and sentiment. For finance-wide adoption figures, see AI in Finance Statistics.

96% of fractional CFOs are net positive about AI's impact on finance. 44% are "excited" ("it can only help") and 52% "mixed" ("some good, some bad"), against 46% and 46% for all respondents: slightly more measured than finance leaders overall. 2% call AI overrated and 2% are worried it will hurt finance teams. From CFO Connect's CFO Salary Benchmark 2026. Scope: sentiment, not usage; the fractional section does not report usage rates. (CFO Connect, June 2026)

7% of senior finance leaders say they do not use AI at all. The largest groups save 3 to 5 hours (38%) or 1 to 2 hours (36%) a week with AI tools, and 13% save 6 to 10 hours. Same CFO Connect survey of 516 finance leaders, all work types combined (not fractional CFOs only). (CFO Connect, June 2026)

11% of independent professionals say they are not using AI at all. Three in four are actively upskilling on new AI tools and platforms, 39% collaborate with others who have AI expertise, and 44% expect clients to require AI expertise on engagements. From Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 Talent Lens Survey (n=3,810, August 2025). Scope: independents across all functions. (Heidrick & Struggles, 2026)

74% of US independents use AI, and 61% say it saves time and increases output. From MBO Partners' 2025 State of Independence in America (fielded April 2025). Scope: all independent workers, not finance-specific. (MBO Partners, 2025)

AI at the client end: small companies

Fractional CFOs mostly serve companies under 50 employees (see above). Official statistics show AI adoption at that size is well below large firms.

Under 20% of US firms with four or fewer employees reported using AI. Overall business AI use hovered between 17% and 20% from December 2025 to May 2026, against 37% for firms with 250 or more employees and 32% for 100 to 249. Use rose among firms with 20+ employees over the period but did not change significantly below 20 employees. From the US Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), a biweekly, nationally representative survey that asks whether a business used AI in the previous two weeks. (US Census Bureau, May 2026)

17% of small EU enterprises (10 to 49 employees) used AI in 2025. Against 30.4% of medium enterprises (50 to 249) and 55.0% of large ones (250+); 20.0% of all EU enterprises with 10+ employees, up from 13.5% in 2024. From Eurostat's survey on ICT usage in enterprises. Scope: excludes firms under 10 employees, where most fractional CFO clients sit. (Eurostat, December 2025)

Why companies hire them, and how the talent sees it

85% of CFOs report a shortage of skilled finance talent. Only 15% said their organization was not experiencing a shortage of accountants or other finance talent, and 35% said they are increasing their use of external resourcing firms to find candidates. From Deloitte's 1Q 2025 CFO Signals survey of 200 North American CFOs at organizations with at least $1 billion in revenue. Scope: large enterprises, and "external resourcing" is broader than fractional CFOs. It evidences the talent shortage behind the model, not the model's adoption. (Deloitte, 1Q 2025 CFO Signals)

75% / 63% / 61%: the benefits interim talent say clients gain. 75% cite filling a critical skills gap, 63% bringing an objective outside perspective, and 61% accelerating key initiatives. From Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 Talent Lens Survey (n=3,810). Note: self-reported by the independents themselves, across all functions. (Heidrick & Struggles, 2026)

50% of fractional CFOs are not looking for a new role in the next 6 to 12 months. Fractional CFOs report higher satisfaction than the average finance professional, though they are more open to change than full-time CFOs (nearly 60% of whom intend to stay). Of those looking, 37% want a new challenge and 13% a higher salary. Same CFO Connect 2026 survey. (CFO Connect, June 2026)

Excluded figures (and why)

The fractional CFO niche has a serious primary-source problem. These widely circulated numbers were reviewed and left out:

  • "Fractional leaders grew from 2,000 to 110,000 on LinkedIn." Attributed to "LinkedIn data" (sometimes via Umbrex), but with conflicting base years and no traceable LinkedIn publication. Excluded.
  • "Fractional professionals doubled from 60,000 to 120,000 (2022 to 2024)." Circulated from a conference report; the figure is not in the primary press release, which only confirms a 250-person survey and "more than 140,000 professionals on LinkedIn who list 'fractional' in their job title" (all roles, not CFOs). Excluded pending the source data.
  • "US fractional CFO TAM of $3.2bn, reaching $6.4bn." Traces to a single vendor blog ("our research indicates") with no methodology, then re-cited as if primary. Excluded.
  • "Virtual CFO market = $4.7bn / $7.8bn / $9.4bn." Second-tier market-research reports size the same market with figures that disagree by 60%+ for nearly the same year, all with paywalled methodology. Not reliably sized. Excluded.
  • "Toptal fractional rates rose 18% (2022 to 2024)." Appeared only in search snippets, untraceable to Toptal; likely fabricated. Excluded.
  • Per-stage adoption and savings claims ("78% of $10M to $25M firms use a fractional CFO," "80% cheaper than full-time"). Vendor blogs with no sample or methodology. Excluded.
  • "Gartner: 30%+ of midsize enterprises will use a fractional executive by 2027." Cited secondhand; the original Gartner publication could not be located. Excluded pending source.
  • "Outsourced finance professionals earn nearly 20% more than permanent in-house peers" (CFO Connect 2026 executive summary). The same report's detailed chart puts the fractional CFO premium over full-time at about 3%, and the executive summary does not define its comparison groups. The detailed, defined figure is used; the 20% is excluded.
  • "Interim CFOs account for 51% of all interim leadership requests" (one sentence of Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 report). The report's own charts show 51% as the CFO share of interim C-suite requests and, separately, the finance share of interim requests at all levels. The page cites the chart reading, not the sentence.
  • "56% of finance leaders use AI; 35% of finance teams use ChatGPT" (CFO Connect, State of AI in Finance 2026). The public page does not disclose sample size, respondent profile or company sizes. Excluded until the methodology is published.
  • "The tools fractional CFOs actually use" rankings. Widely published lists of fractional CFO software and AI tools come from vendors or consultancies, with no survey behind them. No primary measure of tool adoption among fractional CFOs was found. Excluded.
  • Hours or days per client. Often quoted ("one day a week per client," "10 to 20 hours a month") but not measured by any primary survey found; CFO Connect reports total weekly hours only. Not shipped.

Changelog

  • 2026-09: Refresh. Added two sections on AI use (fractional CFOs and independents; small companies at the client end, from the US Census Bureau and Eurostat) and a section on engagement length and contracting, with the Institute of Interim Management's 2026 UK survey (assignment length, fractional share of assignments, day-rate basis, day rates). Expanded the CFO Connect engagement figures after re-reading the report (five-plus clients, client size beyond 50 employees, client stage, weekly hours, remote split). Updated to newer editions: Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 High-End Independent Talent Report (interim CFO share and growth) and BLS May 2025 wage data ($166,570 median, previously $161,700 for May 2024; growth projection now 10% for 2025 to 2035). Corrections: the all-respondent "no bonus" share is 40% in CFO Connect's chart, not 42%; the FractionalJobs article is dated February 2026, not March; Grand View's F&A share is "over 21%"; MBO's growth since 2020 is 86% per its press release. Re-pointed the MBO Partners and Robert Half links to the edition-specific pages (the MBO landing page now shows the 2026 edition). Checked every link: all resolve. Five new exclusions documented. Added "part-time CFO" wording. Further reading updated to the three fractional CFO articles plus one earlier piece.
  • 2026-06: Initial version. Ten figures across demand drivers, the F&A outsourcing proxy, the engagement model, pay, and rationale, from Russell Reynolds, BTG/Heidrick & Struggles, MBO Partners, Grand View Research, CFO Connect, BLS, Robert Half, FractionalJobs, and Deloitte. Several heavily repeated market-size and "LinkedIn fractional growth" figures were reviewed and excluded for lack of a traceable primary source.
