Layerz vs Claude

Short answer

Claude on its own can draft a financial model in a chat, keep instructions and files in a Project, and create an .xlsx file with its built-in skills. Layerz is not an alternative to Claude: it is a structured spreadsheet that Claude connects to through MCP, so the model keeps named variables, a history and its conventions between sessions. Use Claude alone for a one-off draft; add Layerz when the same model is updated every month, by you or by several people.

Choose Claude if

  • A one-off model or a quick sizing that nobody will maintain.
  • Language work around the numbers: commentary, memos, board narratives.
  • Exploring a question before deciding whether it deserves a model.

What Claude does well

  • A first draft of a model, a variance commentary or a board narrative in minutes.
  • Projects keep instructions and reference files for each client.
  • Skills create Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, and custom connectors reach other tools.

Choose Layerz if

  • The same model is updated every month and must give the same answer after each session.
  • You work across several clients and want one structure reused with different data.
  • You need a history of what changed, and written conventions Claude reads first.
  • The client needs an Excel file with live formulas, not a file regenerated each time.

Using both

  1. Keep using Claude, with a Project per client for instructions and documents.
  2. Add Layerz as a custom connector (https://layerz.cc/mcp) so Claude works on a structured model.
  3. Ask Claude to build, update and check the model; export to Excel for the client.

Pricing

FAQ

Do I need anything besides Claude to build a financial model?
For a one-off draft, Claude alone is often enough. For a model updated every month, Claude benefits from something that holds the model between sessions: named variables, a history and written conventions. Layerz is that layer, and Claude drives it through MCP.
Is Layerz an alternative to Claude?
No. Layerz has no AI of its own. Claude, or another MCP client, connects to Layerz and edits the model with Layerz tools. Layerz replaces the spreadsheet the model would otherwise live in, not the assistant.
Can Claude remember my model between conversations?
A Claude Project keeps instructions and files between conversations, but not a live model. With Layerz connected, Claude reads the model and its FINANCE.md conventions at the start of each session and continues from there.
How do I connect Claude to Layerz?
Add Layerz as a custom connector in Claude with the URL https://layerz.cc/mcp and sign in. Custom connectors are available on every Claude plan; the free plan allows one.
How much does it cost?
Claude is billed by Anthropic. Individual: free, unlimited models, one editor. Team: 49 € excl. tax per editor per month, from the second editor.
